Scab Resistance in Apple
Apple Scab (Venturia inaequalis) is a common fungal problem that requires growers to
spray susceptible varieties up to 10 times per season. This is a high cost activity and one with
significant environmental impact. Even with a high number of sprays, control can be difficult.
Scab resistance in apples has been achieved through cross breeding resistant crab apple varieties
with commercial varieties. However, the resulting varieties have not been of high quality and are
not well accepted by consumers.
